Classic boats cruise around lake Jessie Johnston

From jet engines to the power of steam, the seventeenth New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show welcomed marine vessels of all kinds. The two day event attracted around 120 clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats, sailing dinghies and their owners, to Lake Rotoiti’s Kerr Bay for displays both on and off the water. The event, which first started in 1999, was the creation of Pete

Rainey. “I was restoring an old classic boat and got interested in the kind of activity that was happening in the States with classic boating and saw that nobody was really doing that kind of thing in New Zealand, so thought I’d give it a go,” he says. Nelson boat owners Newton King and Nicky Murdoch brought their 1960s runabout Taranui along for the weekend, a boat they found and purchased around two years ago and know very little about. The vessel was discovered in the

shed of a bach they bought in Tennyson Inlet in 2013. The previous owner believed it had not been in the water for at least 20 years and, once it was brought back to Nelson, it was found to be in near perfect working order. While a number of awards were handed out for the different classes, it was the hydroplane Bel Air lll that took home the Jens Hansen trophy for Best Vessel Overall. Owned by Peter Knight Jnr, the boat was built by Peter Knight Snr in 1965 and set a world speed record in 1968.

Councillors clash over committee

Nelson city councillors have clashed again, this time over a decision by mayor Rachel Reese to split the community services committee in two. The mayor announced the establishment of a new sports and recreation committee at last Thursday’s full council meeting as a late item – meaning it was the first time that most of the councillors had heard of the change. Councillor Pete Rainey has been chair of the community services committee since 2007 and sees the move as a demotion, as it will take responsibility for sport and recreation away from his committee. He says he was only told about the new committee last Tuesday in a meeting between himself, Rachel and deputy mayor Paul Matheson, who will chair the new sport committee. Pete says he walked out of the meeting.

Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

“It was the first I’d heard of it – I had absolutely no idea it was coming,” says Pete, who called the move to split the committee as just “petty politics playing out”. “This just suggests how the city is being run – all this behind the doors carry-on,” he says. “I was under the impression that this mayor wanted to operate in a transparent way. I don’t think it’s transparent. It’s frustrating having everything pulled out from under you when you’ve done so much hard work for the past nine years.” Rachel says feedback from the community indicated that there is a growing desire for an additional focus on sport and recreation, including looking after Saxton Field, the marina strategy

Brittany Spencer Neihana Nukunuku was in his mate’s car driving along Rocks Rd last Thursday night when an allegedly intoxicated driver began swerving and driving dangerously in front of them. With his friend behind the wheel, Neihana decided to video the dangerous driving on his phone. “We were just coming out of the lights and we started seeing them swerving, but we didn’t really take much notice. At first we just thought they were average drivers, but when we saw the bottles we were like ‘oh, they’re drinking’,” says Neihana. “We started videoing after the worst of it, but they nearly hit a van and a cyclist and chucked a couple of bottles at the rocks on Rocks Rd, they smashed everywhere, they were idiots. “We went along Rocks Rd and then, when we got to the roundabout near The Warehouse we wanted to go into town, but we just kept following them. Huge cannabis haul for police Police have hauled in more than 9000 cannabis plants from this year’s annual sting. Police were assisted in the aerial phase of the operation by the Royal New Zealand Airforce, with their NH90 helicopter enabling staff to reach difficult to access areas. Operation commander senior sergeant Grant Andrews says the amount of plants recovered is a significant increase on last year’s result. He says officers located some large commercial outdoor plots along with a number of indoor growing

operations. As a result, 13 people are facing a range of drug and firearms charges. About 6000 plants were recovered in the Nelson-Marlborough area of the district and more than 3000 on the West Coast. While the aerial phase has been completed, Grant says there was still a lot of work to be done following up on information gathered and further arrests were likely. He encouraged anyone with information or concerns to contact their local police.

Kids give TRYathlon a crack Jessie Johnston Proud families cheered from the sidelines as local kids swam, biked and ran their way around Tahunanui during this year’s Nelson Sanitarium WeetBix Kids TRYathlon on Sunday. While a number of records were made during this series of the event, Nelson didn’t quite surpass its 1800 participant record from last year, settling instead for an impressive 1715 entries from children aged between 7 to 15 years. The event encourages children

of all fitness levels to get active in a fun, friendly environment where everyone is a winner for giving the triathlon a go. Depending on their ages, the course featured a 50 to 200 metre swim, a four to eight kilometre bike ride and a one and a half kilometre run, before participants passed over the finish line. Black Sticks women’s hockey team captain Anita Punt, Breakers foundation player Dillon Boucher and former Silver Fern and the most capped international player of all time

Irene van Dyk, were all there to congratulate the kids on finishing the triathlon and present them with their medals. Richmond’s Cameron Nicholls, 10, was amongst those participating on the day, his first time as a TRYathlete was back when he was seven. The fun and fitness that the triathlon offers has seen him come back to the event four years in a row, with rugby and cricket all part of his training. As a series, the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon is the world’s largest sporting event for children.

Nelson’s most burgled suburbs revealed Locally Owned and Operated

Kate Russell

New data released from New Zealand Police has revealed Nelson’s most burgled suburbs, with the city centre, Tahunanui and Stoke being the worst hit areas. Tahunanui Hills and the Nelson Airport area were also within the top eight, making the Tahunanui area one the most burgled places in Nelson. An interactive map on the New Zealand Herald website shows each reported burglary that has occurred in the region in the eighteen month period between July 2014 and December 2015. The data gives a breakdown to mesh block level, the smallest geographic unit by which government agencies

Inspector Matt Arnold-Kelly says he is yet to see the data, but suggests it fits in with recent trends. “Tahunanui would definitely fit in with the trends we’ve seen in that time period,” he says. “But different suburbs go through trends at different times.” Trafalgar/city centre had the most burglaries at 69, followed by the Isel Park area at 68 and Tahunanui at 63. Glenduan had the lowest number of burglaries at only two, followed by Clifton, at eight. Monday was hottest ever day recorded in March The MetService has confirmed what we all knew, that Monday was stinking hot. In fact, the MetService’s communications meteorologist Lisa Murray says the maximum of 29 degrees Celsius that was recorded at Nelson Airport was the hottest March day since records started in 1943. Lisa says the previous March maximum temperatures were

ELA

ORENCE

28.3 degrees recorded in 1962 and 27 degrees recorded in 2007. But that was still just short of the 30.3 degrees recorded in Nelson on Christmas Eve which was the hottest December day since 1943. Lisa says Monday’s record March temperature was the result of a “ridge of pressure north-west of us combined

with a light south-westerly flow over the top of the South Island that is strong enough to keep the sea breeze at bay”. It was even hotter in Richmond where the Network Tasman Trust clock on Queen St showed an unofficial 30 degrees soon after 2pm. The temperature reading briefly jumped to 31 degrees for a few seconds at 2.40pm.

The average value in the city is now $439,741. Home values in the Tasman district were also up slightly, by 0.2 percent over the past three months and 3.0 per cent year on year. QV Nelson Registered Valuer Craig Russell says the Nelson market continues to see significant value growth. “A number of agents have switched to no price marketing such as selling by auction or by negotiation, this indicates both that house prices are rising quickly and a strong market where purchasers may being forced into a bidding war which can put upward pressure on prices. Previously, properties up to $450,000 have been in the greatest demand; we are now seeing an increase in this with properties up to $550,000 now in hot demand. There is strong demand within the subdivisions for vacant land; this is particularly strong within Stoke and Richmond which has seen an increase in asking prices in recent months.”

Nine new zones could house 400 Nelson homes More than 400 new homes in nine different locations could be built around Nelson as part of a housing accord passed by Nelson City Council last week. The Special Housing Areas are scattered around the region with an area off Prince’s Drive the biggest, capable of fitting 100 new homes. The housing accord, which is in conjunction with central government, includes specified design controls to ensure “high quality, urban design outcomes”. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the development will be good news for the vitality of

Nelson’s inner city. “We are driving forward on a range of initiatives to ensure our city centre continues to thrive. The development of Betts Carpark is one of the proposed projects.” Rachel says that Betts Carpark offers the perfect location for such a development. “The site is a few minutes’ walk from Nelson’s hospitality and retail heart. It’s also an easy location from which to walk to the swimming pool, cinema and library.” Housing minister Nick Smith says the programme is to increase new home construction

by facilitating faster planning and consenting. “The advantage of the Special Housing Area status is that it provides a far quicker process for areas to be zoned residential and a streamlined process for consenting. It will enable these 400 additional homes to come onstream faster,” he says. The nine special housing areas include space for 100 homes off Princes Drive, 60 at Bishopdale Pottery, 40 at the Ocean Lodge, 20 at Betts car park, 21 at Three Ridges, 12 at Barcelona Lofts, 40 at Paru Paru Rd, 18 in Tahuna and at 6 at Orchard St.

Teen’s concert will help him live performing dream Simon Bloomberg

Talented Richmond teenager Jake Robinson desperately needs to raise funds to get to London to join the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ Young Shakespeare Company and study at the prestigious London School of Musical Theatre. Last year, Jake, 18, was selected as one of 24 college students to represent New Zealand as a member of the Young Shakespeare Company which will attend workshops and perform at the Globe Theatre in London in July. And things got even better when he was also accepted for a one-year diploma at the London School of Musical Theatre after a successful call-back in London in January. However, Jake says the two amazing opportunities will cost around $50,000, so he has organised a fund-raising concert to be held at the Nelson Musical Theatre on Saturday to help get him to London. Jake will be performing alongside a talented line-up that includes the Nelson Youth Theatre Company, Fargher Academy of Dance, Nelson Musical Theatre, A Star Academy of the Arts, Off Broadway Performing Arts and Soundstage, as well as some of his talented friends. "I'm so excited, it's going to be awesome. We have some great companies and friends performing so it's going to be a

Jake says he's looking forward to studying at the London School of Musical Theatre and taking another step towards his goal of becoming a professional performer. The former Garin College student admits moving to London is a big commitment, but says it's necessary to receive "some of the best training in the world. "The London School of Musical Theatre

and Mountview are two of the top four schools in London, so it's an amazing opportunity." Jake's fund-raising concert is titled With A Little Help From My Friends and will be held at the Nelson Musical Theatre at 95 Atawhai Dr on Saturday starting at 7pm. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased online at iticket.co.nz or from the iSite in Millers Acre in Nelson. Cash only door sales will also be available on the night. Andrew Board Nelson ratepayers will get their bills unrounded from July this year, after a change in the council’s accounting system. In December, Nelson Weekly reported that ratepayers were sent their bills with the total amount rounded to the nearest ten cents, despite it not being needed for those paying electronically. The impact on ratepayers was small, either a drop or increase in rates by six cents at the most. But after prodding from Stoke resident John Lacey, the council has decided to act from the start of the next financial year. Communications manager Paul Shattock says the error in accounting was pointed out to the council last year but they couldn’t make a change until the new financial year. Those paying cash will still have their bills rounded. John Lacey says he’s happy that the council has made the change, but believes that it took too long. “I brought it to [Nelson City] councillor Ian Barker’s attention in June last year. I’m disappointed that it took so long to sort out and I’m disappointed that they’re not going to credit the extra money they took, back to the people. But the good thing is that it’s sorted out and we can move on.” Ratepayers receiving rounded notices, until July, can still choose to pay the unrounded amount.

Library on the move? I was quite surprised to read our mayor is wanting to move the city library. These last few years, thousands of dollars have been spent on updating the library both inside and out, and it's a great place to spend time and the service is first-class. If she wants to do anything at the library, charge for out-of-towners, who don't pay any rates, using the computers. What Nelson really needs is a mall on the scale of Richmond Mall. I know it's been thought of before but certain shop owners put a stop to it, a car park could be built under the mall and, like Richmond, it's a relaxing time moving around the mall. Come on, mayor Rachel, think big like our earlier pioneers and created the cut that must have paid for itsself hundreds of times over. George Barker. I was flabbergasted when I read this headline in the Nelson Weekly last week. Don’t know where our mayor is coming from with this one. I have never heard of such a stupid idea, the library is in a perfect location with ample parking for users coming in from the suburbs and to re-locate it would waste thousands of dollars of ratepayer’s money. It makes no sense to move it to a new location, which would be only a few hundred metres from its present location! But really, I think there are other underlying reasons why the council want to move the library. Mark my words, the current site is prime location and I believe they have other plans for

this. This is the underhanded way in which our council works these days, they cannot be trusted. Robert Renshaw.

Great idea, Trafalgar Street badly needs more activity to bring life back into town. John Sauer. Who wants the current library site? I bet they have made a offer too good to refuse, that's what the move will be about, or maybe so Hone can have free wifi. Sarah Mitchell. The library is lovely where it is. Plenty of parking and beautiful outlook, and swings by the river with the new pathways the council have spent so much on. Nicola Gardiner. Local businesses replace tourists' car: Wow that is so kind! June Kirk. This is why NZ is the best country in the world. Everyone's selfless desire to help others, and that a box of brews is a completely valid form of currency. Go NZ, you rock! Padraic O'Regan. Good for them. It's confirmation that decent Kiwis do care. Kathy Neal. Way to go BMTT, these guys also are sponsors of top of the south Speedway, the Richmond A&P

show, Richmond harness racing, they maintain the gear that bales the hay for Richmond Riding for Disabled, among other things I don't know about. Their community effort isn't always recognised, awesome guys. I will keep breaking my tractors and implements so you guys can keep fixing them, lol thanks. Kris Cumpstone. That's fantastic. Well done. Makes me feel proud to be from that region. Sue Shirley. That's why, after visiting more then 50 countries already, me and my wife keep saying Nelson is the place we would love to live at. Manuel Sequeira. New flag: For those of you who want to keep the flag for reasons of loyalty, it would be helpful if you, like me, read the history of how the country (and flag) was formed. It was formed by English gentry bent upon gathering land by any means. They did what they could to keep working men, Maori and women from having a say in the rules of the land. To avoid using the word Constitution or Republic, their methods succeeded in keeping a man, and certainly a woman, of any race from gaining from hard work, a fundamental of democracy was missing. I simply want to change the flag because it is too like the Australian flag. Gay Hodgetts.

Two very different lives, same game at Neale Park and I haven’t done any meaningful exercise since and I’ve got back to 120 [mumble, mumble]. “I’ve had a couple of years where I was really depressed and when you’re depressed you eat more, you’re lethargic, you hide away, you eat more… And then you start getting muscle injuries because you’re just too heavy.” He says he got good at pretending during the many community events he MC’s. “You might be feeling shit, you might be dragging your arse, but no one wants to know that. If you’re out there to entertain them you have no right to drag them down with you. “So you put on a mask, go out there and do it. It doesn’t matter how bad you feel you have to give them impression that you’re on top of the world. No one wants to see a sad-o behind a microphone.” But when he got home, the mask came off and Murray says a big packet of chips and bottle of Coke would help make him feel better. It took a coffee with Victory Boxing’s Paul Hampton to snap him out of it. “Paul said ‘hey, you’ve got to come into the gym, 10 o’clock tomorrow’,” says Murray. That first session was 20 minutes, the

next 30 and five weeks later Murray is now doing sessions over an hour, three times a week. “I’m feeling so much better. You start changing your eating habits, you get out more, the dog’s been walking faster than he’s ever walked before.” Murray has already lost weight but, more importantly, says Victory Boxing has been the first step to climbing out of the hole he was in. Amber’s hole was a different shade of dark, but it was dark nonetheless. Last June she was a stay-at-home mum with post-natal depression and had no motivation to work. By her own admission, her daughter did not have a good role model in life. “I had quite a few bad habits and I had to get rid of them.” She says she was instantly hooked on boxing. It took a month or so for her to gain the courage to join in with an adult class, but eight months on she says she can’t imagine her life without it. “I had quite bad anxiety at the start. I’ve never really played any sport and hadn’t even owned a pair of sneakers since I was at intermediate. “But there was something about it that caught my attention. It’s a challenge and every time I think of giving up I

Murray Leaning and Amber Rowland-Connor weren’t meant to cross paths. Murray is a 53 year-old radio presenter, well-known MC, former football referee and he is obese. Amber, 22, is a part-time waitress, mother to a two year-old girl and a year ago weighed just 41 kilograms. She had started drinking and smoking at school and that had lead her down a “different path”. Both were unhealthy and unhappy – it was one thing they had in common. The second thing they had in common was a decision to head to Victory Boxing, and now they say it turned their lives around. Victory Boxing started as a programme to help give kids at Victory Primary School “a bit of direction”, it grew to be a centre that sees hundreds of school students pass through its doors every week. Founder Paul Hampton says the programme hasn’t changed its focus but it has had to adapt to the growing demand from adults seeking a challenging form of fitness. Five times a week up to 40 people will

gather in its Vanguard St gym. They skip, shadow box, hits pads and mentally push each other. The classes attract lawyers, mothers, professional athletes, chefs, fishermen, students and doctors. It attracts people from every corner of Nelson. The adult classes also help subsidize the kids' classes, where Paul and his team make sure cost isn’t a barrier to participating. The charity’s other major fundraiser is the high-profile, high octane, Fight4Victory charity boxing event. Murray has been a key player in the Fight4Victory’s success. He was the MC at both events, along with comedian Mike King, and says he was hoping to do the training with last year’s competitors. But then came the health problems: shingles, kidney issues and a knee that was so weak it would pop out of its socket during work outs. He had to pull out. It pushed Murray further into his “dark space” that began a few years earlier with a knee injury while refereeing football and the death of his mother. “At one stage I got to 140 kilos, I went to Weight Watchers for four and a half years and got down to 79 and a half. Then I blew my knee out refereeing a

just need to remind myself of why I started, it keeps me going.” Amber is in the gym four times a week and also runs the Tamaki St steps several times a week. She has put on almost ten kilograms and says, for the first time in her life, she’s proud of herself. “I’ve never really been good at anything and I actually feel good at something for once, and it’s an amazing feeling. I’m proud of myself, amazingly proud.” Amber says she’s made a “heap” of new friends at the gym, feels the best she has since she was a kid and, most importantly, boxing has made her a better mother. “I feel like I have more energy for her now and I want to take her out and do stuff. I can see it coming out in her too, she’s a happy child and that makes me happy.” Paul says hearing Murray and Am-

ber’s stories, along with the dozens of others, fills him with pride. “How good is someone feeling better about their life? It doesn’t get better than that. It’s a tough old world out there, a busy world. Everyone has their own story, you never know what people are going through.” Paul says he often gets letters and emails from teachers and parents saying how the gym has helped a child or teenager, but to get that feedback from adults as well shows his team is doing something right. “The fact that the adult classes have grown is really a testament to the philosophy of the gym really, where everybody is welcome. We don’t care your history, if you’re going to respect the values of the gym then you become part of the Victory family.” In Murray’s words, it’s a family that has “given me my life back”.

David reaches his first goal Andrew Board

David Trotter’s first goal has been achieved, now it’s on to the next – the Wairau Warrior obstacle race. Last month Nelson Weekly ran a front page story on David and his quest to participate in the 6km Wairau Warrior in April, as well as raise $6000 for an all-terrain wheelchair needed for the race. The reaction to the story was strong and swift, and last week an anonymous donor added the final donation of $2500 needed to buy the wheelchair. Wairau Body Systems owner Greg Witika says he is thrilled the fundraising goal has been reached.

David Trotter, centre, will compete in the Wairau Warrior 6km race in April, along with his teammates from left; Simon Topp, Seija McIntosh, Jay Blazek and Greg Witika. Photo: Andrew Board. “It took us less time than I thought.

He’s relieved and now he can just

concentrate on the race. Everyone is over the moon. Just want to thank everyone who chipped in.” To make the final donation even sweeter, it arrived on David’s 44th birthday. Greg says David has even become a minor celebrity since the story was published. “There’s not one person who doesn’t know who David is now. He and his carer are just getting stopped in the street with people wanting to say hi to David and he loves the attention, which is great.” The Wairau Warrior is on April 9. NELSON CITY COUNCIL Making Nelson an even better place

Issue 421 8 March 2016

Second Hand Sunday Second Hand Sunday is coming up on Sunday 13 March from 10am. It’s a great way to get rid of stuff you no longer want or get something new for free. Visit nelson.govt.nz to register or download the list of households taking part.

MAYOR'S BOUQUET

Work starts on stormwater improvements Council’s focus on investing in upgrading our stormwater systems continues with two significant, long-term projects starting on and around Waimea Road. I’m delighted to recognise this month’s bouquet recipients, Helen and Denis Le Cren, for their 20+ years of voluntary work at Broadgreen Historic House. Helen has been involved with Broadgreen for 22 years, Denis for 18. Together they have made a significant contribution to this unique Nelson heritage home. Helen has served as Chair and member of the Broadgreen committee, has a regular weekly shift as a guide, and trains new volunteer guides. She also researched and wrote the highly informative visitors’ souvenir booklet and audio tour guide to the house. Denis takes on a wide range of maintenance tasks on the house and also designed and co-ordinated the construction of the adjoining Broadgreen Centre, which provides much needed extra space. Helen and Denis have also willingly responded to after-hours security callouts for many years. Their generosity has gone a long way towards caring for this unique heritage treasure, and they are fully deserving recipients of our appreciation. If you know someone you consider worthy of a Mayor's Bouquet, just follow these easy steps: • Submit the nominated recipient's name and contact details, along with 150 words on why they deserve recognition – usually for going the extra mile to perform services to our community unpaid and unsung. • Send via post to Mayoral Bouquet, Nelson City Council, PO Box 645, Nelson 7040 or email to mayorsbouquet@ncc.govt.nz. Remember to include your name and contact details. The Mayor's Bouquet is brought to you in association with Woodlea Florist, Bridge Street, Nelson.

nelson.govt.nz

The projects sites are indicated on map: • Hampden Street East, around 1 Nelson College, Franklyn Street and Waimea Road. •2 Around the Caltex Service Station corner, affecting Market, Waimea and Boundary Roads. •3 A short section of Waimea Road, near the Ridgeway turnoff, will also be resealed this month. While these projects are much needed, Council is aware they will create traffic delays. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained where possible or diversions will be put in place. For the duration of the projects please remember to: • Allow extra time for journeys. • Be patient and considerate around the work sites. • Travel by Rocks Road if you can. • Consider walking or cycling on the Railway Reserve. • Use the frequent commuter NBus service to help reduce congestion, get timetable details at nbus.co.nz. Works and Infrastructure Committee Chair, Councillor Eric Davy says, “I understand there will be disruption as a result of these projects but they are critically important to improving stormwater capacity. This remains one of Council’s top priorities following the catastrophic storms we’ve had in recent years. “We listened to businesses in the

project areas and held the start of construction until after the main tourist season, which should also mean fewer vehicles on the road. We’ve also worked hard to align the stormwater upgrades with other work. We are taking the opportunity to tackle water and waste water

projects as well for cost efficiency and to reduce disruption for everyone in future. “We ask for your understanding while we work to get these projects done quickly and safely,” Councillor Davy says.

Nelson Arts Festival is moving to an independent governance structure.

Recycling wheelie bins Later this year Nelson City Council will deliver a wheelie bin for plastic, cans, paper and cardboard recycling to every home. Glass will still be collected in the current blue crates.

Calling for nominations for the Arts Festival Transition Group Nelson City Council is calling for nominations for members of the Nelson Arts Festival Transition Group. Ideal candidates will have a keen interest in the arts and the Nelson Arts Festival, experience at governance or board level and/or a background in law, accounting or policy work. People with a strong sense of community would also be preferred. Community Services Committee Chair, Councillor Pete Rainey, says the Group needs a wide range of skills, not necessarily people who are just passionate about the Arts Festival. “It’s vital a broad range of experience is brought to the table to provide recommendations on the best governance structure for the Festival,” he says. The purpose of the Transition Group is to provide recommendations and a transition plan for establishing a Nelson Arts Festival governance structure independent of Council. It will also have a shadowing role for the 2016 festival.

Councillor Rainey says a structure for the Festival separate to the Council has been considered by Council and the community for many years. “We feel that confirming the appropriate governance for the Festival is a task for the community in partnership with Council. We want this to be a truly collaborative process – after all this is what the community has asked for.” There are five member positions including one as the role of Chairperson. No remuneration is offered for these positions. It is anticipated that the Group will meet monthly with the Chairperson reporting recommendations to Council’s Community Services Committee. Further details on the roles and responsibilities of the Transition Group are outlined in the Terms of Reference. Nominations close 4pm on Tuesday 15 March 2016. People who are interested can contact Shanine Hermsen, Manager Community Partnerships, ph 03 546 0421 or email shanine.hermsen@ncc.govt.nz, for more information, a copy of the nomination form and the Terms of Reference.

A 240 litre bin will be delivered by default. If you are happy with that – YOU DON’T NEED TO DO ANYTHING NOW. If you want a smaller 120 litre bin you must contact us by 8 April. The wheelie bin stays with the property so if you are renting and want a smaller bin, please confirm your decision with the property owner. The footprint of both bin sizes is the same. If you want the smaller 120L bin please go to the website, nelson.govt. nz and fill out the wheelie bin request form. Or visit the Council office, call 546 0200 or email enquiries@ncc.govt.nz and the Customer Service team will be able to help. Please note: If you decide to change your bin after it is delivered later this year, a charge of $80.50 (plus GST) will apply. There will be other changes to recycling collections as the new bins are introduced so look out for more information later in the year.

Further submissions open on woodburners People have the chance to make a further submission on Nelson City Council’s proposed Woodburner Plan Change (Plan Change A3) with the next step in the notification process now open. The further submission stage runs until 5pm on Friday 18 March. This is an opportunity for people (whether or not they made an original submission) to support or oppose any of the earlier submissions. New issues cannot be raised at this further submission stage. A total of 108 submissions on the proposed plan change were received in the first submission period. The plan change proposes to allow a limited number of Ultra Low Emission Burners (ULEBs) in Airshed B2 (including Stoke, Wakatu and Enner Glynn) and Airshed C (including Port Hills, City Centre, The Brook, The Wood and Atawhai). If there are further improvements to air quality over the next few years, burners could also become a permitted activity in Airshed A (including Bishopdale, Victory, Toi Toi, between the colleges, and Washington Valley) and Airshed B1 (Tahunanui and Tahunanui Hills south of The Cliffs).

Check out our website nelson.govt.nz

A ‘Summary of the Decisions Requested by Submitters’ is available online at nelson.govt.nz (search phrase = Woodburner Plan Change), at the Council’s Customer Services Centre and in Nelson libraries. Further submission forms and full copies of all the original submissions are also available in all of these places. Within five working days of making a further submission to the Council, a copy of that further submission must also be sent by the submitter the person who made the original submission. The addresses of the original submitters are included within the Summary of Decisions Requested document. Submissions will be heard by an independent Hearing Panel in May.

Woodburner survey A woodburner survey of Nelson property owners was also carried out during the initial submission period to

Of the 941 properties without a woodburner, 597 wanted to install a woodburner with 478 of those preferring to install a National Environment Standard (NES) woodburner, 102 preferring a ULEB and 17 didn’t say which type they would prefer. There were 332 properties that did not want to install a woodburner and 12 with no response about installing a woodburner. Of the 386 properties that already had a woodburner, 125 wanted to replace their woodburner in the next two years, with 101 of those preferring to install an NES woodburner, 19 preferring to install a ULEB and 5 didn’t say. nelson.govt.nz

Race unity Day 2015 saw many different cultures coming together.

Review of rural addresses / RAPID numbers

Race Unity Day celebrates the cultural heritage of Kiwis, whether your ancestors were the first to arrive on these shores or you are 'fresh-offthe-boat!'

Council has recently carried out a review of all rural addresses to make sure they have been allocated the correct RAPID number, and to allocate a RAPID number to those properties that don’t currently have one. A small number of properties were found to have an incorrect RAPID number. Council will contact these property owners at the end of March, and a new number plate will be issued at no cost to the owner. The Council will also contact owners who don’t currently have a RAPID number, advising them of their new number, and how to obtain the number plate.

Experience some of Nelson's diverse cultures as they share their delicious food, dance, music and craft. No alcohol.

When: Sunday 20 March Time:

TUESDAY 8 March 2016

11am – 4pm

Where: Victory Square, Nelson Entry: By Koha – from the bottom of your heart!

All rural properties will then have a RAPID number, which will become the official address in Council records. Council will advise Emergency Services, and Land Information NZ, of any new numbers or changed numbers. For any further information please contact Kathy Mardon, Consents Administration Coordinator, at the Council, ph 546 0200.

Need help with a heritage building? The 2016/17 round of the Heritage Project Fund is now open for applications. This contestable fund provides grants to the owners of historic properties, including those with archaeological sites, to encourage the conservation of buildings, objects and sites of heritage value around the city. The size of the Heritage Project Fund is yet to be decided by Council. In the last funding round $100,000 was made available. Students from Hira School monitor water

quality in the Wakapuaka River.

Family fun at the Wakapuaka River Hira School, the Wakapuaka River Monitoring Group and Nelson City Council are coming together to host a Freshwater Family Fun Day for those who would like to find out more about Nelson’s rivers and the Wakapuaka River in particular. Pack a picnic and head along to the Hira Reserve on Saturday 19 March, 11am – 2pm, to take part in a whole host of activities such as electric fishing, games and a treasure hunt. Hira School will be running a sausage sizzle and lemonade stand to help raise funds and there will be a free bouncy castle. Natureland will be bringing some special guests – a tuatara and lizards. At 11.30am and 1pm, Natureland staff will give a talk and provide an opportunity to meet the tuatara. Also find out about the bats living just over the hill at Pelorus and what is being done to check whether they are about. Hira School children have been monitoring water quality in the Wakapuaka River for several years and will share some of what they have learned. Local artists Cid Shearman, Tia Wilkie and Vicki Smith worked as a team to create a temporary artwork, titled wai-mahi, that celebrates the environment and fauna of Paruparu (the Nelson Haven). The artwork, which uses recycled materials woven in to the gate wire, reflects the natural environment of the Haven. The design represents the tidal estuary beyond the waterworks with a cloudscape above. A Kawau (Cormorant or Shag) is shown as the Kaitiaki or guardian of the area – these birds are a familiar sight around the Haven as they sit drying their wings. Alongside are three To-rea (Oyster catcher) in flight – also an abundant species in the area. Connecting the sea and sky is a large Tuna (long finned eel) – an important and endangered species. Also represented are Pa-tiki (the flounder) a lover of the sandy shallow waters and a popular local recreational catch. The project was a partnership between Nelson City Council and local company Aflex, which donated the durable PVC materials for this project. Further improvements to the area will include planting of screening plants around the treatment plant site. Council’s Arts Policy encourages the use of art to beautify capital works, and murals have been shown to be a low cost method to reduce vandalism.

Place your bins with care Please consider other footpath users when you put your rubbish and recycling bins out on collection day. Bins all over the footpath can be a hazard for visually impaired people as well as making life tricky for wheelchair, pushchair and mobility scooter users. Place your bins carefully to leave free space for others on the footpath.

Kate Russell One Nelson woman is preparing for the trip of a lifetime to Los Angeles, as part of a New Zealand team which will be competing against over 44 countries in what is described as the “performing arts Olympics.” Anna Grahame, 24, will be part of Team New Zealand for the 20th annual World Championship of Performing Arts in Long Beach, California this July, and is holding a concert next Tuesday night at the Boat House to help fund her trip. Anna says, after seeing her friends take up opportunities overseas, she decided it was time she got out of her comfort zone and did something different. “I looked online, found the competition, auditioned and was asked to be part of the team,” she says. “I will be attending a boot camp and learning from some of the top vocal tutors in the world and then singing in the competitions with the chance to win medals and scholarships.” Now living in Auckland, Anna spent her early years in Brightwater, moving to

When I moved to Richmond, I was able to start having singing lessons and soon got into musicals with Nelson Musical Theatre.” Anna was part of Waimea College’s choir - Belle a Cappella, under Mr Burcin, which was where she grew her passion and understanding of music.

Damn the Dam

The ten acre Hoddy Estate Estuary Park was part of New Zealand’s first DSIR Research Orchard, established in 1930. Already in production, the Appleby Orchard quickly moved into fertiliser research and spray

trials. Integrated pest control, using predator mites and insects, followed much later. A dam at the orchard was built to prove to doubting Moutere growers that irrigation would benefit their production and today the coastal hills are dotted with dams.

The hashtag says it all, the Mike Pero Nelson Giants will #returntothehanger. Two years after earthquake strengthening issues forced the Giants from their spiritual home, they will once again play their homes games at the Trafalgar Centre from the start of this season. Operations manager of the Giants, Janie Granger, says playing home games at Saxton Stadium over the past two seasons has had some positives, but the Trafalgar Centre – also dubbed the Hanger – is home. “We’re all excited about going home. It will mean more fans, a more intense atmosphere for visiting teams and it just feels right. The hashtag picks up on all that.” For those that aren’t tech-savvy, hashtags help link various comments on social media to one subject. Each team in the National

Basketball League was asked to pick a hashtag for their team. Janie says the move back to the Trafalgar Centre hasn’t been straightforward, with around 250 season ticket holders needing to be contacted to make sure they wanted the seats they had when they were last at the Trafalgar Centre. “We have season ticket holders that go back to the 1980s and they have ‘their’ seats, so that has been a mission. Now we can finally throw the doors open for others who would like to buy season tickets this year.” On the court, captain Sam Dempster says they are gelling well and that showed at the pre-season Blitz tournament in Poirua late last month. The Giants collected wins over competition heavyweights Wellington Saints, as well as the Canterbury Rams and a local side.

The Giants will play their first three games of the season away from home, the first this Friday night against Canterbury in Christchurch. Their first home game is on Saturday, April 2, against Taranaki. Janie says with sponsors all lined up, the team looking sharp and the games back at the hanger, all they need now are the crowds. “Saxton probably suited Richmond people, but not Nelson people. But we are hoping more people will come back on board now that we’re at the Trafalgar Centre.” The Noise Crew and Wannabes also add to the atmosphere inside the

stadium during games and both are back on board this season. As an added bonus, McDonald’s Nelson has come on board as a sponsor and will give everyone in the crowd a free cheeseburger if the Giants score 100 points in a game. Janie says people just need to hold onto their ticket stub and use it to get a free cheeseburger on the night of the game. To enquire about season tickets, email admin@giants.co.nz or call the office between 9am and 1pm on 970 0474. Tickets for games are available from Richmond Mall, Call-a-geek Nelson and Jack Robins Stadium in Stoke.

Three Nelson netball volunteers received "thoroughly deserved" recognition for years and years of service when they were presented with Service Awards at the Netball New Zealand annual general meeting in Auckland last week. Jane Andrew, Maree Smith and Marilyn Milne were presented with their awards after being nominated by Nelson Netball Centre. The trio have been involved in the sport, first as players then in a range of roles including coaching, administration and umpiring, for a combined total of well over 150 years, and Nelson Netball Centre board chairperson Julie Baxendine says the centre is incredibly proud of their achievements. Jane joined the Nelson College Old Girls Club after moving to Nelson from the North Island in 1988. She soon became involved in coaching school, club and representative teams before becoming a hard-working administrator she started the long-running Geraldine Hodgson Tournament and founded the Prices Netball Club during her lengthy involvement in the region's netball. "Her passion, knowledge and love of the sport is immense," Julie says. "Her generosity knows no bounds and no job is too big or small for her to take on." Although Maree Smith has been a talented player and dedicated administrator, she has also made a significant contribution to the sport in umpiring. She has been convener of Nelson Umpires for

"Maree's efforts for local umpires has encouraged and inspired many players and umpires to continue to higher levels. She has had a massive influence on our umpiring development." Julie says Marilyn is "one of our pivotal volunteers" and has given "hundreds and hundreds of hours of time and energy dedicated to filling just about every possible role in netball for over 50 years". Julie says Marilyn has been especially passionate about college netball and fostering young umpires at the Future Ferns level. She also spends every Thursday night during the premier club season acting as a technical official, supporting and training other volunteers - she has also officiated at ANZ championship games. Marilyn's award was the second one she received in the last month after earlier being made a Life Member of the Nelson Netball Centre.

Local teams celebrate masters hockey tournament with titles Brittany Spencer

The Nelson men’s hockey teams were a force to be reckoned with in the 2016 New Zealand Hockey Masters at Saxton Field last week. The 35+ and 45+ men’s teams walked off the turf a little out of breath but with their heads held high after winning their hardfought finals. The Nelson Men’s 35+ team were tied 1-1 with Wellington at full time but dominated the penalty shoot out, winning 1-3. Men’s 35+ manager, player and team organiser Marcel Stutz says it’s been a great

week. “It’s been really good, we hadn’t really met each other until the first game on Monday morning, but we’ve really come together. We’ve got a few locals, some Marlborough boys, and a few Auckland guys, but we gelled really well and we’re all good guys and players, so that’s key.” The Men’s 45+ team faced Auckland in their final and went home with a convincing 2-0 win, while the Women’s 35+ team also made the finals, receiving silver after a 5-0 defeat against Manawatu. Nelson’s five other teams placed further back in the field, finishing between fourth and seventh in their age groups.

Tournament administrator Diane Proudfoot saw all the results pour in and says she’s seen some outstanding hockey over the past week. “It’s great having so many teams up here, we’ve had some really good players and the Nelson teams have all really performed within their age groups,” says Diane. “It’s been a pretty high standard with some very tightly fought matches. We had the Men’s 60+ final on Friday night and that was fantastic, there was a draw at the end so they had to go to penalty shoot out, it was amazing. The tournament saw 69 teams from

Northland to Canterbury and everywhere in between, with 1100 players descending on the Saxton Field turfs. This is the second time Nelson has hosted the Hockey Masters and Diane says it certainly won’t be the last. “It’s amazing to be able to open up the region and Nelson hockey to the rest of New Zealand, and a massive part of that is because of the local hockey community in Nelson. We will certainly look at having it back here again, it would be cool to think we could have it again in 2020. It’s the weather and the people that make a tournament and this has really been a great tournament.”

NelsoN Rugby Football Club The grounds may be rock-hard and cricket may still the sport of choice in many backyards – but the Nelson Rugby Football Club has been priming itself for the start of the club rugby season. Nelson will kick off its 2016 campaign on March 19 when all six senior clubs take part in the opening day carnival at Trafalgar Park. Coach Kade Heke says his squad will start pretty close to how it finished last year, but he’s confident, with last season under their belts, his young squad will win more games. “We were really young last year and this year I think we’re in a much better place, but until you play that

first game you don’t quite know how you’re tracking.” Nelson will welcome back star back Andrew Goodman, after he spent last year coaching while getting over an injury. Kade says that’s a big boost for his team. “Andrew will really help our young guys on the pitch, it’s great to have him back.” Last year was a disappointing one for Nelson, the only silverware coming in the form of the Noel Barton Trophy, which it snatched back from Waimea Old Boys in dramatic fashion when David Havili kicked a last minute dropped goal. Havili is now playing full time with

the Crusaders and he may not be the only player Nelson loses to rep rugby. Quinten Strange is in the mix for the New Zealand under 20 team which – if selected – would see him miss a big chunk of the season. But isn’t just the senior side that Nelson fans can look forward to seeing this year. The division two squad has been training with the division one team and co-coach Chris Pugh says they’re looking strong, apart from the front row. “If I’m honest, we’re lacking a few big boys for the front row, but it sounds like a lot of clubs are in that position. Apart from that, we’re not too bad," he says. Last year, the division two side just missed out on the top four place and Chris says making the semi-finals is one of the team’s key goals. He says he and co-coach Grant Crossett are keen for more players to come along, and they can either come along to training at Neale Park every

David Havili is one of many success stories from the club, starting for the 7-time champion Crusaders for their first game of the 2016 Super Rugby season.

NelsoN Rugby Football Club Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm or they can call him on 027 240 8821. In the junior side of the club, Nelson had around 220 junior players wear the blue jersey last year and, after their successful registration day last Saturday, JAB Club Captain Quentin Harwood

says numbers are looking just as strong for this season. The club is proud to have one of the largest JAB clubs in the region and once teams have been organised, coaches, players and supporters will be looking forward to kicking off the 2016 season on May 7.

A softballing combination that formed at primary school has taken another step towards top honours after Josh Kelly and Caleb Delany were selected for the New Zealand Emerging Sox team. The two year 12 Waimea College students first started playing softball together, with Josh pitching and Caleb catching, as 10 year olds at Brightwater School. Josh and Caleb have made significant progress over the last six seasons and this month were named in the Emerging Sox to play in the Friendship Games in Sydney in June and July. Josh and Caleb had already been selected for national age group teams before playing their way into the Emerging Sox team after a series of top performances for Upper South Island at the national under-17 tournament in Christchurch. USI defeated softball giants Hutt Valley, Waikato, North Harbour and Auckland on

their way to third-place, with Josh and Caleb making the tournament team and Josh being named top pitcher. “We started back at Brightwater and that’s definitely helped our combination,” Caleb says. “Now we think the same – I know exactly what Josh is going to do and he knows my pattern.” Caleb says they have also benefitted from some top coaching from legendary Black Sox pitcher Marty Grant and Josh’s father Nigel who coached the USI team. Marty’s knowledge and experience has helped fine-tune their combination and Caleb says they will be working with Marty again as they prepare for the Friendship Games. Although it will be a challenge training through the winter to prepare for the games, Josh says having Caleb as a training partner will make it easier. Nigel says Josh and Caleb deserved their selection after being the outstanding pitchercatcher combination at the undernationals.

Pink golf day raises money for Cancer Society Totaradale golf course looked a lot more colourful than usual last Thursday, when 62 ladies from clubs all over Nelson and Tasman dressed-up for the Fifty Shades of Pink tournament to raise funds for the Nelson Cancer Society. The Totaradale ladies decided to organise a pink-themed fundraiser after one of their popular members, Anne Dobbie, passed away in January after suffering from cancer. Fifty Shades of Pink raised $1640 for the Nelson Cancer Society with some of that coming from a raffle for Anne's

electric golf trundler which she asked husband Bruce to donate to the club before she died. "We normally have a picnic day tournament, but this year we decided to make it a fundraiser for the Cancer Society after one of the girls passed away earlier this year," one of the organisers, Fran Sutherland, says. "All the prizes have been donated by local businesses and all the proceeds will go to the Nelson Cancer Society." Fran says ladies club president Sue Rawson was the driving force behind Fifty Shades of Pink, which also fea-

tured pink balloons attached to all the tee markers and pink table cloths at the luncheon. The prize for the Best Dressed team was won by the Sugar Plum Fairies, Cay Cockerell, Marg Hall, Clare Heslop and Marcelle Porritt, who played with pink fairy wings while the more serious prize of the winning team went to Marg Orman, Linda Ujihara, Andrianne Wislang and Cherie Hancock. Cherie also won the division one individual stableford, Ros McKeown won division two and Linda won the division three competition.
